When we first heard of light therapy to help our son on the spectrum, we were already doing so much! Special diet, appointments, therapy, supplements...you name it.
And our version of "all the things?" It was pricey - and exhausting - to say the least.
I couldn't have been less interested in light therapy. I couldn't have been more wrong.
So now, I'm a mom on a mission - to make sure other moms have better information, continual support and encouragement, and a clear vision of how amazing life can be when we all live Our Life With Light.
Years ago, if our son wanted to sneak through a room, you wouldn't have been able to hear him. But if you saw him...you would be hard pressed not to do a double take.
Not only did he walk on tiptoe before we started using the X39 patch, but he was so high on his tiptoes that we would actually catch strangers wincing as he walked by.
The only thing equal to the difficulty it brought to life years ago is the joy of how his toe walking has changed since starting to wear the Lifewave patches.
Can you imagine being a middle school kid who has never been able to wear a pair of flip flops in the summer?
Not because you didn't want to. Not because you prefer a slide strap across your toes. But because your foot - like the rest of you - was barely growing, and what was growing was growing tighter all the time.
This was every summer of our son's life. Until we took a chance on self-sourced light therapy. A very happy story awaits, just click below.
Staying focused...it's something all kids struggle with. These days, sustained focus is even a challenge for adults!
For our son, prior to the patches, we had a matter of seconds to get his attention, make a point, and quite frankly...just hope for the best.
But the best is not usually what we got.
Imagine our shock and delighted surprise when we saw an enormous improvement in his ability to focus - not just when the patch was on, but when it was off, too!
He is much less reactive - not immediately jumping to retaliate when someone does something that he doesn’t like.
For instance, a sibling touching him just to be annoying: he can dislike it without reacting.
This was actually something that he had noticed himself and added to our growing list of improvements. He is so right. This definitely was a huge issue before and I can't even remember the last time this happened.
He is much more patient and amiable when someone doesn’t do what he wants them to do.
For instance, a sibling or friend not playing the game he wants to play.
Before patching, especially when overstimulated, this could have sent him into a fit or hiding away in his room, taking up to several hours to calm down.
He is able to shake off interruptions to his speech, which is just absolutely amazing.
Before patching, any interruption would upset him deeply. Not just on an emotional level, but it seemed like it really did deliver a huge challenge to his brain holding onto a thought - which added to the emotional aspect.
Often he would not even attempt to continue talking, and would just shut down further.
It was really beautiful to hear from him that he thought it was really cool not just that he is able to carry on through an interruption, but that we as his parents noticed this change ourselves!
He is able to remain calm and state his case clearly and logically when asking for something or arguing about something he doesn’t agree with.
It felt like we went from having a first grader to having a mature teen in a matter of weeks - and it has only gotten better since then!
He is able to hear an entire sentence (or string of sentences) and process what is actually being both said in literal words and conveyed in a particular sense.
Before patching with the X39 stem cell activation patches, he could only hear a few words, put them together often out of context, and then get really upset over something that was never actually said. This had been a huge pain point for a long time.
